here are some images from the book which i bought off Amazon.. (for an amazing deal. way to go Amazon!) and a very very small part of my vast collection of toys. each toy i look at i get more of an idea of aspects that i definately want to include in my own design. I really want to make a capsule/random toy... like a Kinder Egg! or many of the collectibles on the market at the moment.. I also would love to make something flocked... i really love that. I am still not sure WHAT the figure will be but i would quite like it to have a personal theme, such as graphic design tools or toy buyers themselves... not sure yet... also, like i said before... robots and cyborgs are always cool...
ASTRO BOY!!!!! one of my favourites...your average adorable, flying, japanese robot boy!!!
Silas range by James Jarvis.
A drop in the ocean when it comes to my collection, but here we have: Stay Puft, Robocop, Aladdin Kubrick, Raisin Bran Sun Kubrick, Roger Rabbit Kubrick, Miniture Eames Chair, Cutie Pie Baby Doll, Character from the "In Crowd" by Jarvis. I have chosen these onces because they all illustrate different aspects of toys. and different manufacturing techniques which i want to look at.
Cant remember where i got this or what its from, but i have had it for YEARS and its the coolest toy ever.... LOOK how many small parts there are! not for young children! thats for sure!

Hi Sam! Your project looks fantastic...I love the retro super Mario graphics. I did a bit of research into getting toys manufactured but the scale of mine was too difficult to produce (I needed 10 figures each of 30 designs, which no factory would do). So I'm planning to make everything by hand out of polymer clay/Fimo. The Momiji Dolls that you see on my blog were made in Hong Kong but they're part of a commercial project and viable because a huge number will be made.
I think you'll have a good chance in getting a factory or workshop to produce a single sample of one design. I'm afraid I don't have any concrete leads but you could try www.octane3.com which is a large art toy community (though being a fan, you might know about it already).
This is forum thread where someone is asking about vinyl manufacturers. The companies Iniplastics, NPT and Adfunture come up.

If you decide to make a prototype by hand, you could commission a sculptor (or sculpture student?) to create a model out of clay, then cast a mould with it. London Graphic Center have a good selection of DIY casting kits.
Hope this was of some use, and best of luck with your project! (Even if the timescale doesn't work out for your 2nd year, you should continue researching the options for your 3rd year project...a bunch of top-notch vinyl toys would make a stunning display at the show!)
